The Dead Thread

...notice that its now favourite for this years Christmas No1.
Like quite a few Christmas songs, the twinkly hummable melody is what people recognise - they don't always clock the lyrics, some of which are quite dark or controversial. Always makes me chuckle when songs like that end up massively popular, and it's not just the Christmas ones - I'm thinking of stuff like There She Goes, You're Gorgeous and Perfect Day.

....probably on slightly stoney ground but your comments remind me of many Irish folk songs that sound so lovely but in fact tell quite grim stories.

Greg Lake, most well-known for being in ELP, has lost his fight with cancer, aged 69. Sad news.

Ah no, 'I Believe In Father Christmas' just got that bit sadder and more poignant. Was only listening to it this morning but without this knowledge.

A talented musician in a seminal genre-setting prog-rock band is better known to many for a one-off chrimbo ditty. Fair enough I suppose, just doesn't seem right.

Very true....first Crimson album still rocks IMO...saw ELP a couple of times in Liverpool, most notably at St Georges Hall...another of my music heroes gone..rip

Only Carl Palmer left from a wonderful band of the 70's.
RIP Greg - a superb vocalist and a pretty decent bass player too.

My favourite out of the popular Christmas songs unfortunate lyrics as Greg will be seeing a lot of peace and definitely a lot of earth this Christmas.

Am gutted at Greg's death tbh , he was sound and a gent! Loved ELP but he will always be remembered for his Christmas song! I love it tbh and thanks to him I still believe in Father Christmas, RIP mate!
