Apparently he'd been a Cant all his life.
...Liverpool solicitor Rex Makin has died aged 91. I have to admit to thinking he died some years ago.

The proof to me of how formidable an advocate he was, was that he defended villains, coppers, the rich and the poor with the same tenacity.
He was proper old skool character.
His funeral will be a humdinger.

My father had a number of businesses in the centre of Liverpool up till about 1990. One day Rex approached him complaining about something or nothing.. to which my father replied "why don't you just p..s off to Otterspool Rex" - that's the extent of my knowledge but I think I understood what it meant.
He was actually arrested a couple of times for importuning down there and it was swept under the carpet.
My arl man knew him quite well through work and spoke very highly of him, said he was great company, but must've been a swine to work for lol
