The Dead Thread

Natural causes or has he chose to bow out?

Not saying anything on the news apart from Lembit Opik saying he was probably depressed at losing his seat and acknowledging he was a heavy drinker.

...that Opik interview was revealing, he said he feared this was about to happen as Westminister and politics was his life. Apparently they were pushing to get him in the Lords. No details on the cause that I have heard but from what Opek said the fella was having a tough time. Sad, a likeable and principled man.

Salmond was a good mate of his apparently, seen him interviewed this morning and he said nobody had seen him really since the election and he said he was obviously going through a tough time, he also acknowledged he was an Alcoholic.

.....at times like this you tend to get cross party support but in this instant it seems totally genuine.

Sad news and more than a bit of a shock given his age.

Thought he was sound as a pound really and came across as one of those rare specimens - an honest politician. Found myself agreeing with him most of the time especially on stuff like the Iraq war and PR. It took guts to come out and admit his alcohol issue which didn't seem that big except that he was his party leader and it was being used as a way to get at him.

Probably the best leader the LibDems have had.

RIP Charlie.
