The Dead Thread

Can't say I've heard of them, but top 10 is fair enough I guess.
That song did overshadow all their other output ( Bowie offered them suffragette but they chose dudes instead ) which is a shame as there's some cracking music from them! The usual stuff did for them ( drugs, bad management, fallouts, the lot ) Mr Bowie loved them as did Queen just a shame it all went tits up.

I actually cannot stand that Dudes song. It makes me cringe. Also, they sound so much like Bowie, did DB do any vocals on that song?

Are you saying that bands / artists should only be judged on the number of hit records they have or had?
I think some people are given the full 'omg so sad cannot believe they're gone' treatment when they barely made a scratch on the surface of their sphere of influence.

Of course, everyone has a different sphere of influence and one man's one hit wonder was another man's best band ever.

Or a band like Led Zeppelin who had no 'hit singles' as such but did sell 300m albums. Judging a band by their hits or not having hits is a pretty narrow minded approach.

How many albums did Mott The Hoople sell? Sorry, but they're a minor sidenote in the history of music, and would've sunk without trace but for Bowie's intervention.

Just as you shouldn't say McDonald's makes the best food in the world because they sell the most, you should avoid ranking music's quality or impact on people by sales.

Taste in music is subjective, but good marketing creates the demand.

This Jason Isbell song could have easily passed as a Glenn Frey song, but Jason Isbell will never sell 10% of the albums the Eagles sold:
