The Dead Thread

"The boys are bacķ in town" was said to be about a group of Manchester gangsters called the quality street gang which Phil Lynotts mum was friendly with.
I read Eric Mason’s autobiography in which he makes reference to this song. Apparently he was friendly with the band in the early days and dropped into Phil’s mums pub one day on the off chance of meeting up with them, the story goes that they’d been away and Eric enquired as to when they were returning, apparently Phil’s mum answered “The boys are back in town” …. Thus the birth of the song. Eric Mason was a part of the QSG apparently.

Some Musician who posts on one of our local sites says back in the 60's when he toured with bands they used to stay at Phil's Mothers "hotel". He said breakfast was never served till 5pm and often you would wake up in the night with a woman in your bed, said Phil's Mom would put it on the bill whether you did the deed or not

I dream of a life like that 😂

I met Shane McGowan once in the Mother Red Back in Archway about 30 years ago. An Irish lady I hung around with introduced us. He looked at me with the most vacant look in his eyes and crap all down the front of his suit and uttered a few words and went back to his drink. Half hour later he was handed a mic and totally came to life, like a different man
He arrived at the pub sat on the back of a red cadillac (or similar) and all the local Irish bought their kids out to see him, lining the street like he was the pope - an amazing scene.
