Just read that one of his first jobs as a presenter (up from researcher) was to cover the terrible Stardust Fire tragedy.
Nice photos here - including one of him at the summit of Croagh Patrick less than 2 years ago. Raised money for MND charities.

Former RTÉ journalist Charlie Bird has died at the age of 74 following a long battle with motor neurone disease.
Irish Oldies on here will remember his breathless updates from the Philippines covering the arrest on false charges by Akino's regime of of Fr Niall O Brien in 1084.
