Dave..investment in theatre shows and movies is a different thing altogether to investment in football clubs, its usually lots of investors chipping in a small amount, sometimes for a 'credit' as 'executive producer', and a lot of investment in films is guaranteed by one of a few specialist finance/insurance houses. As I think I've said before, Bills bread and butter income, and I would opinion his pension as well, is his early investment in the stage and film versions of Educating Rita, and the film of Stepping Out, both of which are usually being shown/performed somewhere in the world. Bill had the foresight(luck?) to get his money into those titles very early and has reaped rewards. The problem with producing movies is that a lot of independant movies fall by the wayside before production starts,or become so burdened by budget restrictions that they never have a chance of satisfactory completion. Distribution is also a problem and to make money you usually have to sell TV and DVD rights in advance of production. Even Kickstarter etc have been taken over by seasoned professionals trying to finance movies.
