Robert Earl is a businessman....and successful. Many successful business people experience bankruptcy, or the watered down American version.....Richard Branson for example. Bill knew Earl because he was quite friendly with Earls father. When the relationship with Gregg went sour(and Greggs business was built up largely through Bills shows...Gregg would buy run down theatres and refurbish cheaply, then fill up with Bills budget touring versions of guaranteed hit musicals etc. Gregg succeeded on the back of the success of regional theatre in the UK, after years in the doldrums, and Bill Kenwright was the major force behind this success. As a senior exec at One Nation/Apollo Leisure once told me...'there would be very little provincial theatre in the UK without Bill Kenwright'.
There's really no way of spinning Earl's involvement as a positive for anyone other than Kenwright.

He knew he would add absolutely nothing to the club beyond shoring up shares, and he brought him in anyway.

Bill needed someone to buy the Gregg shares, and he sold the dream to Earl. Its possible Earl offered some input to Bill about the running of the club, but I doubt it, Earl was seduced by the thought of retail profits from DK and Bill took advantage....on a personal 'needs must' basis....so I think we more or less agree on the mechanics of that particular transaction. As I said, Earl is the one who is the stumbling block when it comes to selling the club, because he's looking for a big pay day.

So in summary, Bill is a massive blagger and used his position as chairman of Everton to fool somebody into investing on a promise he could not deliver. Now that is possibly (according to you) hindering the advancement of the club financially as Earl has realised what a gravy train the premier league is and wants a massive return on the blag dream he was sold.

Played a blinder there has William Kenwright OBE, no wonder half the fan base can't stand the wretched man any more.

Thanks for clearing that up!

Since Blue Bill bought out Johnson - is there any other top flight club that's attracted no new investor/owner? It seems incredible if you think about it that us alone have been left untouched.

We've been up and down through recessions. There's been various ground move sagas and the book of the TV money - yet nothing.

If the powers behind the thrown aren't Blues then surely they'd happily bank 5 or 6 times their investment and walk away?!?

I just hope we get taken over by someone who really loves the club, steadies the ship, invests in youth and is loyal to a good Manager.

Someone that provides evidence of their love by investing in the club to grow it financially (rather than pointing at the increasing TV income that all competing clubs get as success), by not lying to the fans/scamming AGMs, and by providing the manager with some sort of competitive edge (over Stoke etc, not City et al) in the transfer market to demonstrate his talent.....would be nice

since Martinez has joined Bill has sanctioned the following ins/outs:

ins:

McCarthy (10m)
Lukaku (23-28m)
Mori (9m)
Lennon (?)
Deulofeu (4m)
Cleverly (free)
Besic (?)
Barry (?)
McGeady (?)
Kone (?)
Robles (?)

looks like almost 60m there in total ins.

out:

Distin (released)
Jelavic (?)
Fellaini (27m)
Anichebe (8m)
Mucha (released)

around 35m in total outs.

in/out:

Eto'o
Alcarez

From all those there's barely an entry we shouldn't be happy with. It's excellent business from Bill and sound management from Martinez.

And of course in that time Bill has resisted bids for Stones, Seamus and Baines. Kenwright's time will be up soon due to the passage of time, but I think most reasonable fans will thank him for his sincere efforts in keeping us true and competitive.

Bill ought to have been shot if the Manager hadn't been backed with all the free money coming in from the tv deals.
If I was to assess what Bill has done over his time as chairman, it'd look something like this.

Pros.
New state of art training ground.
Hired one and three quarters good managers who are used to working within limited financial backing and overachieving in spite of that.
Kept the club financially stable with sensible expenditure within it's means.
Has backed managers where and when he has had the money.

Cons.
Failed to find new investment over the full 16 year extent of his tenure.
Two failed ground moves with another ground-move stuttering and stalling.
Club now has significant debt and mortgages.
Does not own assets in training ground, whilst Goodison is heavily mortgaged.
Club relies on bridging loans on a season to season basis to provide sufficient funding to get through a season as a result of a lack of capital. As such the club falls further into debt due to this lack of capital.
Club has underperformed and continues to underperform on a commercial level.
Lack of vision and expertise to promote club into developing markets.
No trophies.

Overall you'd have to say not a great tenure for Bill, were it not for the TV money would our commercial side have improved much at all?
Competitive for what by the way Holliday? We have consistently been more than competitive on the pitch in comparison to our underperformance off the pitch.

I hope Bill gets well soon btw, just don't think he's been the fantastic chairman some would make out.
He's done alright at a pinch, but nothing more than that.
