The Fab Four

Deulofeu was hugely overrated and won't amount to anything more than what he may or may not have done with us. One trick pony who won't be at Barcelona for very long, and is only there now as limited backup and because he came through their youth setup.

We were never going to stop either Stones or Lukaku, two excellent talents. They will both achieve more in their careers elsewhere than they could here. This will always be the case as long as there are better teams than us.

The only worrying one is Barkley. Not being able to keep hold of him or at least sell him for a sizeable fee is inexcusable.

Let's not forget, though, that all of these players played in the same team which achieved absolutely naff all.

Maybe if we would’ve actually done anything of note with this ‘fab four’. But as it is, they’re all regarded as big talents throughout the spine of the team and yet we didn’t come any closer to winning anything with them all in the squad than we have at any point over the past 20 years.

I think a lot of our fans remember what they want to when looking back at previous seasons. All 4 were undoubtedly big talents with a lot of potential but only Lukaku fulfilled that potential whilst at Everton with his excellent goal scoring record. As a result clubs who can offer him Champions League Football, and trophies were after him, and we still offered him a big contract and kept him for longer than he wanted to be here. Any level headed supporter knew that a player capable of scoring 20-25 goals a season would not be content with staying at a side in 7th-11th.

There is little point in mentioning Deulofeu's exit since it was out of our control, however, we endured game after game of him failing to deliver. His all round game wasn't good enough and he wasn't anywhere near consistent enough in an Everton side that finished 11th last season with Lukaku in it.

For me the jury is still out on John Stones as a defender but if he is surrounded by the World Class talent that City have and rarely gets tested, then he may well make a solid career there. However, I haven't forgot his inability to defend in various circumstances or the numerous pathetic goals we conceded whilst he was in our defence during some poor football under Martinez. We kept him for longer than he wanted to be here too.

Barkley will probably have spells in the first team of whoever he moves to, but also periods on the bench when his form dips. It's a shame that a boyhood fan wants to leave in this manner but I have no idea what has gone on there and he clearly wants to go.

...these lads have ego’s that make them want to play for the most high-profile clubs. That’s the reality. Until we join that group of clubs, until we are successful, our best players will want to leave.

And so they should, I don't begrudge that. Football careers are over in the blink of an eye and I know I personally would want to finish it having achieved something.

Who knows. Something has happened which we don't know about I think, but it's the club's mission to keep hold of their homegrown talent, or sell when they aren't massively undervalued.
