In 2000's

approx £200 million in Manchester

The list goes on...

NONE of this existed in 1996 or before and the GB facilities were second rate.

Its Everton's turn to build facilities for the city of Liverpool now as well.

Not an athletics track but certainly a stadium that could host rugby and similar events that will be in an iconic dockside location.

Pack it in with talking about Rugby you Welsh Tory Rat.

Yes that's it exactly. To be fair a lot of Irish olympians have gone over and trained in the UK as well and that has helped with a lot of PB's. A top 10 in a diving event, silver in sailing and rowing. Only .002 of a second off a bronze in the 400m final and more.

Obviously you need the individual talent as the starting point but the commitment of over £350m is stagering when there have been cuts all over the shop to social services etc. The medal tally will justify the spend.

Its national lottery funding. Meaning people aren't Taxed.

They make a voluntary contribution of 20% of their lottery ticket.

Plus then there are smaller central funding annually then 'special event projects' (from government for facilities) plus profits and membership fees that sporting bodies get.

This has yielded results and GB is like a formula 1 team now.

Australians are fuming about it and the French.

NEA me. Its just we've built and built and built for 20 years.

It's a mute point but the lottery money can be spent on anything. It's an admirable commitment that it is spent on sport.

When Russia have been focusing on bribing and juicing it's good to see genuine investment in talent - apart from team sky who will eventually be found out.

I think you'll be waiting a very very very very very very long time for Team Sky to be 'found out' when they're not 'juicing'

Time will tell, but they said the same about Lance and Contador etc etc

Anyway back on topic 8th place for Ireland in the modern penthalon up from 25th in London.

Yes but there's a different culture in the UK.

Any of the cycling team caught cheating will find their career is over. Contador and Ulrich etc are part of the tour's history of cheating that seems to have just been 'accepted' in continental europe.

I use the example of Scottish cyclist David Millar. Caught. + career over.

The British cyclists know this. If Froome is caught given the era of WADA and other's poking their nose into everything... then they know they'll be finished and probably financially finished too.

Hence why I give them the benefit of the doubt, with increased testing on them and the rest.

As always if the chemists are good they are 2 years ahead of WADA. Some of team sky's riders results have belied their previous.

There are genuine questions.

Yes, but they're freezing samples these days and retesting months or years later

Anyone can bely their previous if given the right training and environment.

Look at Everton. We made a turning gash into jewels a regular occurence.

Equally, we turned jewels into gash on many an occasion.

You're just part of the ultra utlra cynical view. Probably added to by you being Irish and naturally inclined to not want a British cycling team to be winning.

They retested samples from 1984, they would have had to retake all the medals off the winner's. So they stopped.

I'm British, he is right. All the top athletes are on PED's and the labs are miles ahead of WADA due to them being under funded. Team Sky are more than likely cheating, history in the sport of cycling backs this up.

I'd stop testing, let everyone have free reign.

I've no issue with a British team winning anything - he'll I suppose Everton.

I call a spade a spade - Stephen Roche's tour win (remember when Britain couldn't get a rider near the top 10 in a tour? ever) is massively discounted and discredited by most Irish cycling fans. Its ok to question questionable results.

Kestrel breeding was a bigger sport in Britain before SKY pumped the money in don't forget.

Now they dominate professional cycling.

Yes. But prior to this domination drugs cheating was rife. Now the authorities are all over them. Then a sea-change occurred.

That is why I'm not as alarmed as you seem to be about it.
