The follow on Dan Simmons excellent - the Summer of Night.

Unfortunately not a patch on the Summer of Night,

Try’s to read like a modern Gothic Horror, but fails.

@anjelikaferrett if you’ve bought the first one, don’t buy this - easy to read, but dull.
Didn't realize that was the same guy who writes SF. I read Hyperion years ago and thought it was v good but not amazing, but I know some folk hold him in really high regard.

Lefty stuff is it?

He also writes non sci-fi fiction. The best I’ve read so far is - The Terror,

He imagines what have happened to Franklin and his crew during their I’ll fated journey to find the North West Passage.

Superb book.

Just started reading Arabia by Levison Wood, and it's an extraordinarily good read.

For those that don't know, he's the former Parachute Regiment soldier who's made Channel 4 series on Walking the Nile, Walking the Americas and Walking the Himalayas. Met him too, a real, genuine down-to-earth bloke.

All his books are very good reads, but this Arabia is outstanding ;)

Just finished Greeks Bearing Gifts - the final novel in the Bernie Gunther German detective series. Author Philip Kerr died shortly before publication.
To be honest it's not the best of the 13 books. Maybe the basic premise of ex-nazi era detective crossing swords with old SS and Gestapo men was starting to wear thin but the writing is still good and the humour is nicely sardonic as ever.
The series is worth tackling from the beginning.

Having a read of Jonathan Franzen's last one, purity. About a third of the way through and it's very good - fast moving, feels lighter than his previous stuff. He's very skilled, strikes a balance between being literary / having something serious to say and being very readable better than any other modern author I can think of.

I’m not a big lover of sports books, but I wanted to read this to see if it would shed any light on why he did what he did.

Unfortunately it doesn’t and is really just a series of short interviews with ex players, managers, family and friends.

The only one who put his head above the parapet and offers an opinion was Big Nev.

Disappointing tbh

the title is tasteless marketing: promising deep insights to sell more copies then not providing the promised insights. It's an old publishing trick but on this subject it's a bit cynical.

I really wanted it be something above the usual sports books, due to what happened and Speed being such a top player when he was here .

It turned out to just be the same thing over and again.

Just finished this - The Perect Storm.

( the film was taken from this book )

It’s all fact up until the point where the boat goes missing. The rest is based on testimonies from the crews of other boats caught in the same once in a lifetime storm - 120 foot waves / 100 mile and hour plus winds.

Well written and really drives home how incredibly dangerous deep sea fishing is. Also the incredible bravery of the search and rescue teams.
