The GOT Book Club

Almost finished reading this.
Really enjoying it tbh—my knowledge of the Donner Party was pretty rudimentary

It would make a fantastic film too.

I`m really surprised no one has picked it up yet tbh.

I`m reading another one at the mo, about the rise and fall of the Comanche Tribe.

It`s written in a very similar style to the Indifferent Stars and although it focuses more on the tribe, rather than specific individuals, it`s doesn`t detract from the book in anyway.

I`ll post a review of it, when I`ve finished it ;)

* The levels of brutality are off the scale and some of it is quite a tough read.

I think one of the books that most affected me when I was younger was Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, which just goes inexorably through the destruction of the Native American way of life tribe by tribe and area by area. Well worth reading if you have never come across it.

The-mans imagination is was off the charts as are his characters can’t really think of a poor one.
Even brief walk on, almost throw away characters, you feel he could've got a whole book out of them.

I have to give mention to his Long Earth stepping idea and to Stephen Baxter for running with it.
(There are days I look at a potato and wonder - what if?)

If you live in the Republic of Ireland I would recommend this book . Fascinating, I'm coming to the last 50 pages and it is impossible to out down.

Read all three trilogies based around Fitz. Really enjoyed them.
I just finished the third book - liked it overall, very epic, Fitz is a fantastic character. Plot issues were massive tbh but I guess I wasn't too bothered. If you were then there's no way you'd finish book 3, as it is so focussed on the quest story.

Which one of the other trilogies is the best? I'd like to read at least one more of them in the future.

I'll have to refresh my memory of them when I get home but I do recall that the later ones refer to and follow on from the earlier ones.

Read The power of the Dog by Thomas Savage over the weekend - great, great book. Often cited as formative work for McCarthy and it absolutely is wrt themes and some biblical characters, but the prose is really simple and direct - you could read it in a couple of sittings.

Recent film is meant to be good - will try and watch it if it's the sort of thing you can get on the telly. Very cinematic book that had numerous film attempts pitched since the late 60s when it was written.

Empire of the Summer Moon - S.C. Gwynne.

Very similar to the fantastic - The Indifferent Stars Above, in that the author finds a way, to turn into what potentially could be a very dry read, into almost reading like a novel.

Chronicles, in spell binding detail, the life of the Comanches, before and after the arrival of the first settlers on their land.

Dispels many many myths about the Wild West too - on both sides.

If you liked - The Indifferent Stars Above, then this is for you.

With the Champions League final in mind on Saturday. I've been reading a new ebook on Heysel, called "Heysel Stadium Brussels: European Football's Darkest Hour." It's written by a Scouse Blue, the research seems in-depth and the book spreads the blame around. For oldies like me, it certainly brings back memories.
