The GOT Book Club

Well, glad that's out of the way for another year.

First published in 1980. Was the 'Gold Standard' at the time. In the intervening years a lot more information has come to light, and it is in need of a complete update.

There is a distinct possibility that a complete update will be undertaken, to coincide with the 85th anniversary of the Battle. I will know more next Tuesday...
After the meeting of Wednesday 7th December, I can now say that the complete update to the book is now looking around 80% certain. Minor contractual matters to be ironed out and agreed upon, and then it will be full tilt into the update once the 'green light' is given...

Any idea, roughly when the new, up to date version, is due out mate ?

As it will be myself and one other researcher (who has researched and written about the Battle of Britain even longer than I have [42 years for me]) who will be doing the complete update, we are working towards publication in 2025, the 85th anniversary of the Battle. The first edition in 1980 was 816 pages. Given the updates that we can do to the loss/damage tables on both sides, and the updates on every other section of the book, we think it will head towards 1,000 pages. The publisher is looking at 4 volumes to even out the publishing costs, and to make it easier on the customer's pocket. We are hoping they will be about 3-4 months apart in publication, to maintain interest and momentum.

Read an excellent fantasy novel this week - The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Kind of a guns germs and steel approach to fantasy with the main character as an accountant (?!) but it is really very good indeed. The heroine vows the most terrible revenge on the technocratic empire who have subjugated her people, via double entry book-keeping and military logistics. Been out for ages and there are two others in the series.

Some very mixed reviews for the next books - unfortunately seems to be the way of it for a lot of authors. Traitor is far stronger than something like The Blade Itself from Joe Abercrombie, but JA got better and better with each book. Feels like all authors should logically progress like this but they don't.

Listened to a podcast that reminded me of an interest I used to have. Certainly appears to have rewoken that interest.

Graham Hancock appears on quite a few earlier JRE podcasts talking about his love and findings through researching pre-history ie pre 2500BC. Astonishing the amount of evidence that has been found that is ignored to suit our current mindset. Very eye opening and thought provoking.

Agreement has been reached on the updated format. We are heading to contracts early in the New Year. After that. it's full steam ahead. We are looking at the complete update being with the publishers some time in 2024, for publication in 2025, the 45th anniversary year of the first edition, with the four volumes each being spaced about 3 months apart.

The final game by Caimh mcdonnell, not great, his other stuff is better.
Must learn to put a book down when it's bad, still not able to do that, I knew a third of the way in ,it was going to be poor, still flaming read it.
What throws me is I look at reviews on goodreads, and if it's over 4 then I reckon there has to be something in it.
Anyone else suffers with this, very frustrating.

I tend to rely on word of mouth and what people say on here, rather than the likes of Goodreads mate.

If someone recommends a book on here, of a genre that you`re interested in, you`re almost guaranteed, that it`ll be decent.

Just finished this most excellent novel, Hernan Diaz's Trust. It presents four different versions of the life of an early 20th-century financier, his enigmatic wife, and the massive fortune they acquire. And now it's showing up on all sorts of best-books-of-2022 lists, so I feel pretty slick.

Currently reading Louis Menand's The Metaphysical Club, a history of William James, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Charles Pearce, John Dewey, and the creation of Pragmatism, the only philosophical tradition ever born in the USA. It's basically the story of how secular Americans came to think the way they tend to do. Good stuff if you like intellectual history.
