The GOT Book Club

Been fascinated with Ancient Greece so finally got around to reading the Iliad.

In summary, the RS are the Greeks and the Gods always help them win in the end.

Every other team apart from us are the Trojans where occasionally the Gods grant them some success and glimmers of hope.

We are the women slaves where we are getting f*#@&d either way.

I’ve been tempted to pick up the Barnes & Noble leather bound edition of the Iliad & Odyssey with the gold leaf edges. Think it’s about £30

Looks really nice! Only piece of advice is to get a good translation. Hated the Iliad in high school but re-read with the Fagles translation some years back and it made a huge difference

About 300 pages into this one which is the first book in Robert Caro’s planned five-volume biography of LBJ (he’s still writing the fifth volume). It’s been his life’s work over the past forty years. Meticulously researched and really gets into what fueled LBJ and what an odd person he was.

This one was great. Now I’m about halfway through the second volume of the biography. Driving my wife crazy with LBJ factoids at all hours of the day 😂.

An Arsenal supporting mate put me into this :

Stuck In A Moment : The Ballad of Paul Vaessen.

Most Arsenal fans wouldn’t even know who he is !

An Arsenal academy graduate in the late 70’s, who, as a 19yr old, went onto score the only goal in the Cup Winners Cup semi in the 1980, against Juventus in Turin.

The following season he snapped his cruciate ligament so badly, that within a couple of seasons he could hardly walk or stand up and quickly slid into depression, heroin addiction and a life of crime.

The book is a posthumous bio, telling the story of his rise as a superstar schoolboy footballer, his short career as a pro and his life as an addict and an outcast.

A really somber read, but well written book, that all young pro footballers should be made to read.

Firstly, how ace is that cover?

I really enjoyed this. A proper unrelenting story with some crazy moments and set pieces that kept me hooked.

The story follows 3 main characters, a former knight turned brigand, a disgraced drunken priest and an orphan girl as they travel from Normandy to Avignon in 14th century France during the Black Death in search of redemption.

It frames the Black Death as an actual war between heaven and hell, so as well as brigands and cut-throats they also have to contend with the corrupted fallen angels and their hellspawn during their travels.

It has a real dark vibe and atmosphere as they wander through dead, plague stricken villages littered with corpses and infested with some really creative and nightmarish foes.
I really enjoyed the characters as well.

Big recommend from me!

I thought its where Zack galifanakis interviews celebrities and it's dead awkward.

Just about to jump into this, heard some great things about it.
It’s about the 1893 World Fair in Chicago and all the crazy events surrounding it. It also covers one of Americas most prolific serial killers H.H. Holmes who was active at that time.

Apparently Martin Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio were involved at one point in making a TV adaptation but I think it got shelved.

You know it’s going to be a good one when this disclaimer is on the first page:
