I think Eminem wasn't bad for a mainstream rapper but I really don't know much at all about the grittier more indy guys, who are probably seen as more artistically worthy

I really appreciate this perspective. Never heard a rapper described as "indie," but I like that a lot. I wish I knew more to tell you, but you can probably chart most rap along this spectrum: West Coast vs NYC; gangster vs political. There are some outliers, but the styles should follow pretty closely.
