The Kanchelskis transfer

I remember the whole saga with Kanchekskis, Donetsk were kicking off over their cut of the fee and it dragged out.

I was in park end for his debut against Southampton and a rocket of a shot just went over the bar from an angle close to me

I was right near him when Lee Sharpe fouled him and he dislocated his shoulder.

Awesome footballer. One of the most exciting transfers in my memory.

At the time I was in my early teens and didn’t really question why one of the best players in the league left United to join us given we were pretty rubbish back then. Now I’m older I often think back to what a bizarre transfer it was. Why did he leave United ? Why Everton and why did no one else try and sign him ?
Probably at his peak and on the wain for a player who relied on pace for much his game. Never keen on a player over the mid 20s who needs pace. Good business to punt him early a lesson we have since forgotten with steady stream of washed once pacey wingers, every other season.

I remember being very excited when Kanchelskis signed, being in the street end when he picked up the ball and everyone stood up, anticipating something good was going to happen.

On how we signed him.
From the stories at the time there were gambling / mafia stories, but Kanchelskis maintains is was about the fact that he needed an operation and the Man utd were asking him to play on regardless, which could have been damaging for him long term. This seems reasonable to me after what has come out about other man utd players who played at the same time, like Paul Parker. Also Kanchelskis agent stood to make a large amount if he moved clubs and really encouraged the move. Man utd paid £1.5m of the £5.5m everton paid to his former club, Shaktar Donetsk and Shaktar Donetsk gave £500k to his agent

We bought Speed the summer after and if we had played Kanchelskis Parkinson Speed Limpar that would have been an impressive midfield. Unfortunately Royle didn't see it that way and we fell apart after the injuries to Parkinson and Hinchcliffe and with us starting to struggle he became a bit subdued and we sold him. Was one of the few players we've had who could almost single-handedly win a game.
