The part of the defence (or should I say 'defense') that is more likely to be involved in trying to intercept passes. Made up of cornerbacks and safeties.

I take it the players trying to 'sack' the QB are like primary defense ??

No haha. Maybe at one point that is how the the term secondary was invented but not now.

The three basic parts of the defense are the defensive line, who are the big guys that primarily try to get to the QB, the linebackers, who either rush the QB or try to stop the running backs and tight ends and the secondary which primarily plays pass coverage and cover the wide receivers.

What does a 'corner' do?
They're part of the secondary. They tend to play on the outside across from wide receivers and cover them either man to man or as part of a zone. Those concepts aren't far away from man to man and zonal set piece marking.
