I remember doing bob a job for the cubs and being given that job to do in a woman's house.
When you think about it knocking on someone's door and going in on your own to do job was a bit iffy.

I sit by the fire most nights hoping some young man will knock on the door offering his services

It was said tongue in cheek. I'm not one for looking at the past through rose tinted glasses. The present day has it's problems but so did the past.

That git is probably responsible for me being a chef. I'd watch his shows when I came home from school for lunch, eating a rancid pastie from Sayers while he regaled his thirsty housewife audience with rabbit blacmange sur la bonbon or some other weird concoction.
I'd mimic him by putting cubes of cheese in my beans on toast and that was my first furtive steps on the rue culinaire... [Poor language removed]
