There were packets of five Weights cigarettes. And adverts for "Cool clear Consulate" as though menthol fags were somehow better for you.We used to spend our dinner money on the way to school in a sweet shop, run by a retired couple. A bag of sweets and a bag of cigarettes. Sold individually!

It was a dust bin ashes from your fire hence they were named Dustbins - in which most household rubbish was burnt - ash is great for breaking down poor garden soil heavy clay etc -
I have a smokeless coal fire & use dry kiln logs runs all my hot water plus 8 radiators on my central heating pump or 4 radiators all day on a gravity feed system with a constant 15 to 21 c all day & all night while the coal fire burns .... we sit in front of a hot coal fire that like last night we built up to still be alight in the morning - I have used the ash to improve my garden soil & the big plastic bin in the winter never fills up in a month - we have a hot ash box to clean the fire out which is placed daily outside & emptied into the bin - it is only 10 % more pollution than a gas boiler - the coal is smokeless ovals made in a factory in the North East plus it cuts down the landfill sites as explained - downsides hard work - plus dust gets everywhere in the home - upsides Chimney swept every year £50 far less than a gas boiler service - Dunsley central heating coal fires in Holmfirth Yorkshire are still in business My gas & electric bills are low ..... Logs & coal have gone up but not as much as Electric & Gas .....
The big problem is now coal log fired central heating engineers are scarce ....
I have no doubts in the future this Government will ban them for heat pumps that do not work that well depending on your house plus the installation cost are tremendous & mainly use electricity non-stop .....
A Refuse collector used to be named a Dustman.... plus he came around the back of your house for your dust bin on his shoulder tipped it on the lorry, & then replaced it back empty in the same place..... every week ..... the recycling crap was burnt on the coal fire & the glass bottles were returned for 3d = 1& 1/2 pSorry Joey, I lost you after hence![]()

Better recycling done back then in the 1960s than it is today ...... less plastic used....
Even beer bottles at the off-licence - you could get money on too - as kids we used to search for empties, a good top-up to our pocket money .... we even used to try passing foreign coins out of mates collections to buy sweets![]()
