Pretty much yeah, but they have other races later in the olympics where they can win gold.

Yes, Cavendish is the sprinter of team. It's the job of the other four to protect his legs, for the sprint finish.

I'm still not entirely sure why this is TEAM cycling?

When you ride behind someone, you expend around 30% less energy. So team-mates tend to do that, with the best rider sat behind them all day.

You'll see people go on breaks to try and force Britain to get all of their team-mates doing that, thus tiring them out for the finish.

If you want to see individual vs individual, watch the time trial on Wednesday.

Yep, that's the plan. They want to make it a mass sprint at the finish, at which point Cavendish will win.

Of course the other thing that makes it interesting is that riders are in national colours here, but still have allegiances to their trade teams. So Bernie Eisel for instance is not going to win the race as he has no team-mates with Austria, but as a Sky rider he's now working to help Cavendish.

BBC coverage is awful btw. If you can get Eurosport they'll give you a much better idea of what's going on. Inclined to think Hugh Porter should watch it himself as he gets so many things wrong.

The BBC coverage has been pretty poor imo. Eurosport and ITV do cycling much better.

As they're off Box Hill now surely the likes of Cancellara or Boonen will have a dig soon. They can't leave it for a sprint as they'll get beaten.

You'd think it's tough for our lads, but they did the same at the World Champs last year and Cav won. We had an 8 man squad then though, but only 5 now. Wiggins is looking super strong though.
