Frankly, the comment about Pompey and Villa pretty much proves Bruce's point, though, doesn't it? They've spent the money, paid higher wages - and still finished behind us.

You don't build a contending team by splashing out some money initially, then looking to turn a profit later. If you start down that road, you need to keep spending money or you start falling back - so you need a bottomless pit of cash.

Or you can slowly build a dynasty, on a sustainable basis - the way Ferguson built Man U back up. Everyone thinks of their PL dominance, but how many remember his first few years in charge when they won nothing?

I have difficulty being too envious of West Ham, Villa, etc. with their overseas "investors", or Pompey's annual clearout of players so they can rebuild from scratch, once again.

If we cannot kick on from the level we've now reached, over the next 2 - 3 years, I'll rethink my opinion. Right now I'm in the camp that likes having a lifelong, true blue at the top, and a canny team-builder at the helm.
I agree with you about moyes i have changed my opinion of him but not kenwright i just don,t trust kenwright with the lies he,s said in the past.
We have a great chance now to push on but we need to spend its early yet i agree but like i said there are a lot of rumours saying we have no money and if we don,t get manny back on loan we will need some pace and quality in the middle to keep moving in the right direction.

We've signed AJ for £10m, Lescott for £5, Howard for £5.
I,m talking from now we bought them last summer and i hope not from this years budget.
we need to add now to what we bought last season as we all know and i,d say we need 2 quality midfield/wingers a full back,a good quality centre half.a striker and a back up keeper.

Clubs aren't going to spend willy nilly because investors want to make a profit. Do you think it's a coincidence that all these investors have emerged since the tv deal has gone through the roof? Football is big business and these guys see the opportunity to make money.

Now obviously the big money comes from playing CL football on a regular basis and backers may spend to try and achieve that but unless they're Abramovich rich and can blow £50-100m on players in one season then no club is going to get into that in a hurry.

We're heading in the right direction and with a bit of patience we'll get there I think, and we won't over stretch ourselves because we're funding ourselves organically.

The way things are going only a few teams won,t be owned by billionaires in the premiership in the next few years and i hope we are not one of those i want to be challenging for trophies and buying the best players.
To be fair to moyes he has put us in a great position but since january there have been a lot of takeovers with more to come and this summer is going to get even sillier and my worry is if we stay as we are we will miss out on a lot of quality signings and have to make do with the next tier of quality but that will take us one way whoever is in charge,we need to take advantage now we have got in the uefa cup lets invest in quality and try to win it .

So 6 players, presumably all above £5m in value? Not even Chelsea spend that much. Time for a reality check I think.

And as I said, I very much doubt any of those investors will be spending much of their own money. You think the signings Man Utd have made this season have been funded by the Glazer family? Try looking at the double digit season ticket increase to see where the money has come from, together with the prize money from winning the PL, reaching the semi finals of the CL and the new tv deal. The days of clubs being treated as hobbies are gone. Football is a business now and investors are in it to make money. Abramovich is different and to be honest I suspect he's in it to gain a public exposure so great that he can't be put into a Siberian gulag like Khodorkovsky by the Kremlin.

You mentioned them needing to be over 5m not me so in reality manny on loan, keeper maybe on loan,5m on a centre half,5m on a winger get rid of bt for maybe 4m then put another 2m maybe to get a striker then a fullback for maybe 2m that will be about 14 mill i assume that is real enough for you.

Man Utd is bless with half a dozen world class players coming through their youth system at the same time.

I doubt very much that it will ever happen to us. Not in the next 5 to 10 years judging from what we have in our youth academy. And I think it's quite difficult for us to make a direct comparison with the way they build success and wealth.

I agree with you, CanadaToffee, but I still see the odd hint from David Moyes that he gets a wee bit frustrated by the constrictions placed on him at Everton.

I certainly wouldn't want someone with dodgy money from anywhere in the world (yes, even if their name was Abramovich), and I would be very careful of the Yanks, especially given the way they run their professional sport over there.

(Mouthing off about the free market and capitalism, and then trying to screw incredible amounts of public funding from state and city by threatening to move to another location while ratcheting the ticket prices ever higher.)

investment isnt the goose that lays the golden eggs a high percentage seem to believe (and shout about) it being.

kenwright cant splurge money in the way toon and the [Poor language removed] are used too, but there are no guarantees (like they have found out) that spending big money will automatically bring some semblance of success.

Lets see how the new league setup and injection of cash works, more live games, more foreign markets, more advertising.

There has to be a reason why so many premier league clubs have been investigated and bought into in the last 12 months, i think its due to the advertising possibilities and the options available to the likes of for example gillett paying himself for the use of his own worldwide branded team to flog his razors or whatever.

we are going to see some interesting developments in the coming 2 years, and i expect to see some legal changes.

As for us, kenwright and the perception that we havnt spent because we cant spend, lets see, how many other clubs have made signings?

for the time being 'better the devil you know'.

Well we have excellent youth players coming through. Maybe you should be a tad bit more optimistic.

No point believing all the hype until I see them in competitive first team action. I'm being realistic, not pessimistic.
