During the American Civil War, the Confederates operated a prisoner-of-war camp near Andersonville, Georgia. This picture of a prisoner gives the viewer a glimpse of the prison's brutal conditions. Confederate soldiers crammed tens of thousands of prisoners into the camp, leading to over 13,000 deaths. I've put a 'spoiler' on the photo because some may find it disturbing.

So this would be the 1860’s right?
What’s the difference between POW camps that result in this, and the Concentration Camps ‘invented by’ the British in the Boer War of 1880’s?
 

Throughout the centuries, humans have invented terrifying ways to torture other people. This chilling mask has screws that the torturer presumably drove into the victim's eyes, making them go blind. An open mouth on the mask conveys the victim's, and the viewer's, horror at this brutality.
