The Republic Of Ireland Football Team In The Jack Charlton Years

Steve Staunton in his hat during the national anthems was my abiding memory of the ridiculous disadvantage us pale-faced leprechauns were at.

I'd love to have seen Mexico take that Ireland team on in a gale-force wind with lashing rain on a water-logged bog in the North Atlantic.

I do seem to remember images of Staunton looking very red in the face at one stage

His red hair and freckles made him a stage 1 cancer risk during the anthems alone.
No fears of Jack changing the tactics or anything! Despite the roasting hot temperatures, the game plan was to still keep on chasing the long balls lads!

We were unlucky not to make it out of the group in Euro 88 to be fair, but we didn't really build on the success of that 1990 world cup sadly.

1992 was the huge miss. We went out of that tournament to an England side we were better than. We played them off the park at Wembley but somehow only managed a draw (they got a poxy deflection and Ray Houghton, usually the man for the big occasion, missed a sitter). We played them four times in World Cups and European Championship matches in that era, won one and drew three.

Denmark went on to win that tournament - we eliminated them in the following World Cup qualifiers.

Huge missed chance.

I think Denmark only got in, because Yugoslavia were quite rightly kicked out because of the Balkans war. We didn't really make the most out of our golden generation sadly.

Compare the 90's and even early 00's sides with the current crop. Unreal how far the quality has dropped off.
It's unreal how corrupt and incompetent an organisation the FAI actually are imo. The current manager as well as the poor standard of players, shows the extent of our problems and how bad things actually are!

Stephen Kenny is a nice guy and all, but a glorified league of Ireland manager has no business managing an international football team imo.
