A great sermon and well worth waiting for. I started watching the blues in that 62-63 season in the old boys pen, I never saw Bill in there btw, mind you, that was before they caged it in and I usually managed to climb over the bars and escape into Gwladys St. in fairly short order. The reason that 'Ale House' was in Jackie Charltons black book was that he broke big Jack's ankle in a tackle in the mid 60s and stood over him and said 'are you alright big fella'. A great ffeature of the derby games in that era was Moggsy and Gerry Byrne (another true hard man) kicking lumps out of each other and never complaining to the ref. Yes a very very hard man was 'Ale House' but also a wonderful footballer, just ask big Jooe Royle what he thought about the quality of Moggsy's crossing.
Thanks for the sermon LCAB it has put a big smile on my face this Sunday morning.
Great read again mate. Reading that passage about the European Cup run in '70/'71 and the what ifs come thick and fast. If we'd progressed past Panathanaikos we'd have had Red Star Belgrade in the SF and beyond them Ajax in the final. Two good teams (Ajax on the way to greatness but not there yet), but so were that Everton team. Who knows what could have happened that year - with a bit of good luck - and how a EC win could have altered history. One of those maddening episodes.
Top stuff as always mate.
Thanks, lcab, great read.

Superb. Am ploughing through the back issues as a result of reading this (at snail's pace). Seems like I've been missing out.
Funny feeling on this one, Oracle.
This is the first time I've actually felt a deep twinge at not having been there as this was the heart of my own time as a youngster. Would have been great - better late than never.
Maybe someday I'll tell you about Ted Abernathy and his deadly submarine pitch if you ever develop a taste for our nation's pastime. Again, many thanks for the lesson, lid.
Quality as always boss
