In short, yes. There are lots and lots of diseases we don't know/understand; it's pretty naive to think this is a "new" disease simply because we didn't know about it 50 years ago. .

that is the thing, it was around 40 years ago, then it settled down with no traces any more of it and all of a sudden it spreads the way it has and the only story is bats.

If you actually look beyond the above article, it has been talked about for a number of weeks now about the source of it, and it certainly wasnt korea who first claimed it.

There are many diseases that are not dangerous to one specie (the carrier) but extremely dangerous to other species. Rabies, malaria, the plague... Surely you can come up with a few as well.

Just because the virus was first known 40 years ago, that does not mean it's new. All that's necessarily new is your knowledge. Are you to tell me that this disease did not affect parts of Africa more than 40 years ago? Maybe, but logic suggests another answer.

Poorer parts of Africa are more affected because they have lower quality health care systems, both in spreading information and providing acute treatment. Do you suppose that Nigeria stopped the spread of ebola simply because the US flew its secret antidotes in during the night?
