Out here the in town speed limit is 40km/h and 30km/h in certian dangerous areas such as narrow streets in residential areas where kids play.

I'm not totally sure what 40 and 30 km/h are in mph but I'm presuming its around 30 and 20mph?

Also, don't cars that go slower use less petrol?
Another thing, the thing I see that is a problem in terms of petrol consumption is mrs dutton from the down the way having a 4 wheel 8 litre turbo charged monster to drop the kids off at school and go shopping with....

Only if you drove at a constant 20mph. Look at all the fuel economy rating of cars, in the city they are always around 20-30% lower than motorway/freeway. The reason.....all the starting and stopping sucks the fuel up like crazy. On the freeway, you use the overdrive gear (the top gear on the car, no good for passing, but drops the revs down) and cruise at a low-rpm using much less gas. Once you go over about 65mph the drag factor will start to make fuel economy drop off markedly. Also, roof-racks, hood-scoops, bikes, kayaks, silly spoilers will all wreck high-speed fuel economy.

I was driving the other day, 750 kms, had a mix of one lane country roads (Cuba n highway) and a four lane each way speedfest (Cuba Autobahn).

Whilst foot down on my supercharged Peugeot 206 on the speedfest I used lots more petrol going at 160km although in fifth gear than what I did overtaking and [Poor language removed] on the country roads.

This was meant to prove something, other than me being the worst melt on the internet.
