A big part of my role with GrandOldTeam is to make it as accessible as possible to all segments of the fan base.

After a comment from one fan, I asked a few Blues to visit and give me some feedback. One area was consistent and pretty damning, and that was it isn't easy to find the latest Everton news/opinion on GrandOldTeam.

As an example. Deulofeu signed. There was a Deulofeu thread, started way back in June 2013, starting with "Who the hell is this lad?" posts - they had to wade through a lot of pages asking who he was, before posts about him signing in the first instance, then posts about hoping he stays, then about him over in Spain, then loads about maybe he'll come back... to find the most recent discussion.

Another point was that on first glance, it wasn't easy to see the latest news. Threads titles were overly vague.

All fair points. Our 'visit' to 'register' to 'post' conversion is pretty poor, meaning loads visit, not many register, and even fewer post. I'm pretty sure this could be a reason why. Loads visit from social media/email/google, then struggle with navigating the forum.

So, in an effort to improve - we're adapting the Everton forum's 'megathreads' threads for next season - by megathread, I mean the massive threads that cover one broad topic.

It's a small change, but one that I think will really help. From 1st August, we'll be creating threads per season. An example will be individual player threads. Rather than a transfer thread from years back becoming the place where all subsequent discussion remains on that player, we'll be creating threads like "'2014/15 Performances' - James McCarthy";

These threads will use thread prefixes, so you can click them and instantly bring up all similar threads. So clicking '2015/16 Player Performance' will bring up all threads relating to player performances - like so;

James McCarthy renewing a contract, would warrant a new thread. As would any comments he makes to the media etc.

The above should give us a healthy balance between new, current thread content, and keeping the forum organised.

Worth remembering that these threads aren't comparable to previous, they're match performance threads. Every single player in the squads match performance wont be analysed, hence the easy filter/search;

The dark blue bar looks miles better.

I appreciate your point about matchday performances only. I can see that being very hard to moderate though and a bunching up of all the player match performance threads will occur with all kinds of non-related stuff included in them.

EDIT. Dark blue bar back to purplish.

Need to tweak.

As for it not being able to moderate, what we're moving towards isn't revolutionary or new. It's a standard on a lot of forums. Example.

Red Cafe seem to have a separate player's performance forum: http://www.redcafe.net/forums/player-performances-forum.73/

The megathread idea is simple enough like, and if adhered to as purely matchday comment would right itself. I just think the temptation will be to use it for other comment and they'll get bumped to the top of the board...at least in the short run.

Of course, some comments will be made, but it's an improvement on the current setup.

Wouldn't you be better just having one Player thread relating to everything about them? You're gonna get loads of duplicating like John Stones Performance, John Stones Injury, John Stones Transfer. You could control the period of the threads to full or half seasons.

Otherwise it's daft.

Disagree.

Simple really.

Match day performances in one thread.

Other debate, warrant their own.

Just like Stones has a transfer thread now, in addition to his massive thread.

If he picked up a bad injury, that would warrant a thread.

Above all;

People are more prone naturally to discussing a certain player's performance within the match thread itself though. It's only afterwards where you may get a player thread bumped to say they've been playing well or not, but then they seldom last through to the next day.

It makes more sense to have dedicated player threads for all player content, even if just limited for a season and then closed. It will be a lot more likely to be used in the correct manner.

That's why they can click the prefix. They don't need to be used realtime?

Did you read the first post?

GOT in it's current format, is poor for finding the latest news/opinion - unless you're an ardent/frequent visitor.

And so, we've adopted a standard to;

The above should give us a healthy balance between new, current thread content, and keeping the forum organised.

Here's an example of it elsewhere;

Man Utd Main forum;

Allowing for relevant, recent discussion for;

Ashley Young new contract...
Javier Hernandez media quotes...
Angel Di Maria Transfer
Rafael best moments after leaving...

Theoretically, they could have just lobbed them all in one mega thread - but don't, opting to segment for the reason's given in the OP.

We need to encourage some real time, relevant threads - rather than sticking everything in one thread forever more.

Think it clutters it up for me, that's probably ingrained into the culture of the Man Utd forum you're linking but just seems like duplication to me and no doubt many others on here.

What do you think John Stones has for tea lads? Or just one thread containing everything about John Stones. For any user clicking on it the relevant trending topic about that player will be getting discussed on the most recent pages. So its not so hard to navigate it I reckon.

Both make fine points, but im leaning more towards what chicomelt is saying.

I mean for example John Stones is a hot topic, but we basically have 2 threads talking about the same thing, which disjoints the discussion a little bit.

That may change tho when the window shuts, but on a personal note, ive always been a fan of the 1 player thread aspect.

Nah, they made a conscious shift. Linked earlier: http://www.redcafe.net/threads/moving-away-from-megathreads.386285/

Been considering it for years, monitored theirs because I had reservations. Worked very well for them, and I've seen others adopt it well. I should have went with my gut on it years back but didn't.

There's no real difference to now.

Stones has...

A mega thread.
A transfer to Chelsea thread.
A John Stones signs New 5 year contract thread.

and so on...

The only difference really is us doing away with the megathreads which cause confusion as to what else is permitted as a new thread. Technically, the Stones transfer thread and his contract thread should have been in the megathreads, but they're not. We're just asking for a continuation of this really, with the mega thread being match day performances to free up/allow autonomy for some new, relevant, real time discussion.

As a rule, forum users and Evertonian's don't like change - but we dont go getting awards for nothing... :coffee:

Let's give it a go, or you can sit like the arl arse at the bar sneering at anyone, or anything that's new or different.

I just wretched at the final point in your politician's response of a post.

When I pull your pants down in PMs it's customary to offer congratulations too.

Turn us into a Red Cafe/RAWK hybrid it is then.
