The funny thing about this is that the statement IS antagonistic towards the fan base, including the majority of sensible ones who just want the club to be run properly.
Usually a statement like this would go out of its way to emphasise "the actions of a small group of fans". The omission here feels entirely deliberate.
Assuming that the board have received legitimate threats (and I don't see why they wouldn't have - seeing some of the madder posts here on GOT in recent weeks), they had the opportunity in these comms to:
I have no doubt that the board got legitimate threats from a bunch of genuine unhinged people - but the overall terrible comms strategy, including this specific statement, is further evidence of the awful corporate management at the club. It's fuel for the fire.

- suggest that peaceful protest is fair and legitimate, but undermined by the small group

Look at the thugs waving their thuggish blue flares singing thuggish songs of support for Everton, trying to get a policeman's horse in a headlock and spitting at the Everton coach it's a disgrace it really is

If you were devious enough to concoct a story to tar an entire fanbase as toxic thugs, who would you select as the prime victim to elicit as much sympathy for the collective and do as much damage to ALL of your opponents as possible, not matter how innocent? Would you choose some financial guy most people have never heard of? Would you choose a legendary player who has scored more goals than all but Dixie Dean? Would you choose a septuagenarian impressario in failing health whose popularity is not what it once was and who is acknowledged as a cunning political survivor? Or would you choose a woman?
