Three countries on World Cup standby

mexico rightly hosted the 1970 world cup, but in 1986 columbia were scheduled to be hosts. they pulled out claiming they could not afford it so mexico stepped in just 16 years after they last hosted it.

Shame the Kirkby Stadium won't be ready in time :lol::lol::lol:

tbh i think i remember that columbia were destined to lose it any way due to someone taking a potshot at a ref in a game and i think a defender got hit in another as well, so they pulled out of hosting as they were going to lose it any way, i remember reading about it in shoot (the football not the rifle mag) at the time.

i dont see the problem with the councils owning the stadiums in italy though, as that was the case in '90. in fact i think some of the clubs have taken over the grounds since then.
some of the places mentioned though shouldnt get the tournament as it is too close to them previously hosting.

just read this on a world cup blog from may 15th

Someone needs to buy FIFA head honcho Sepp Blatter a muzzle. Actually, someone needed to do that about a decade ago but lately every time Blatter opens his mouth something resembling feces pours out. First he said that FIFA had plans in place just in case South Africa can’t host the 2010 World Cup. Then he spent a week trying to mollify the situation by emphatically starting that South Africa will almost certainly host the competition. And now today he once again said South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup but if they don’t Germany is the top choice as a replacement.
Why even name a specific country as a back up if you are so sure that South Africa is going to host it? What’s the point? I don’t see why he just won’t well enough alone instead of adding fuel to the speculation fire regarding South Africa’s preparedness.
Moreover, choosing Germany as a backup? The country did a great job in 2006 but if it ever go to the point to move it away from South Africa I would hope that FIFA would spread the love to another country.

and from today off espn and sporting life.......

The president of the German Football Association has revealed Germany is not one of the countries on standby to host the 2010 World Cup should South Africa be unable to stage the event.

I think Australia could do a good job of it. They did with the Olympics but it would interesting to hear if they had enough stadia.

I like the Aussies too, theyre sound.

like i said the do but all in the same cities, they'd have to utilise cricket grounds and thats not ideal, mcg yes but the others....not really.
prob 2 they could use in syd, 3 in melb, 2 bris, 1 canberra then theyd be struggling.

They could double up with New Zealand, Fiji or something.

Or just utilise Kirkby.

they are actually quite far apart, in flight terms its like us doubling up with south africa. perth is closer to bali than it is to sydney. i reckon euro capitals would be good, with teams not allowed to play at home in the group stages.
who knows what blurter is thinking though, hopefully his slavery remarks will be the straw that breaks his back,i'm sure our journo's could finish the guy off if they really wanted too as they do a great job of ruining national heroes, lets set upon someone who obviously despises everything about us, surely there must be pics to be had of him reaming out platini, or him, platini and that guy from the jamaican fa daisychaining.

Japan and Korea will be in typhoon season so the WC would have to start early like in 2002. So I don't think its going back to the far east.

Mexico could prob do it but they've had 2 and the weather won't be too nice.

I think if Germany is out it will be between the US, Spain and England (I wonder what would happen in England doesn't qualify though would someone get booted).

Others who could do it.

Russia - Not great stadiums but could throw a buy off Fifa suits. Plus good weather for football in the summer

Netherlands - though the country is already crowded they have the facilites though no real large stadiums

Italy

Australia - it would stay in the lower hemisphere

Though actually I can't really see the games not being played in South Africa. Really what do you need? A patch of grass a ball, a couple goals and some bleacher seats. Who cares if John Terry has ride a bus on a dirt road 100miles to a stadium and has to hang his clothes on a nail in the locker room? The millionaries can stay home if they don't like it. The places would still all sell out.

Hang on there Reidy...Perth is closer to Bali than to sydney?? Australia has a couple of decent stadiums? Lower Hemisphere?? Blatter is a helmet? Well Ill agree with you there.

It takes 9 hours to fly to bali from Perth

and 5 from Perth to Sydney

Australia would be a great choice for the World Cup because....

We have never hosted one before
We held the best ever Olympic Games, and in the year of the millenium.
We love sport. We eat sport.
We arent Germany, thats gotta be a plus.
