Time to take back the Flag?

No-ones saying you should fly the flag. Just wondering why you'd call someone a 'neanderthal' for being patriotic.

Theres no other deeper metaphor than displaying your countries colours. You stick together, you support your national teams and you salute your troops. You make your nation stronger at the grass roots level. If that means saying 'Gday' to old mate flying the flag across the street and not looking down on him as some kind of barbaric relic, thats what you do.

You've got a pretty cool flag, as flags go. Id be proud of it, and we are in away, its on ours too.

I guess we enjoy our little piece of turf and like to share it with anyone who decides they want to be Aussies too.

Nationality is an accident of birth. Take Cahill for instance. Samoan mother, English father, popped out on Australian soil. What's his heritage? The whole nationality thing is bunkem. Treat people as individuals, ie a fellow human being, and you can't go far wrong.

Thats abit fractured mate. A persons heritage is how they grow up, and whats passed down them.

I wasnt born here but Ive adopted this way of life, as have many Aussies.

Treating people as individuals is true, but you bring your prejudices and your own way of life somewhere else and whats the point of you even going? You embrace your identity and that of your country or you turn your home into a battleground. And how often do we see that in places all across the World?

A few points:

1. Flying the flag of your nation is not an insult to any other countries. It's just a way of saying "I'm proud of my country", not "Every other country is crap". I would have absolutely no problem with somebody moving to this country & flying the flag of their previous home to show they're proud of their roots. Likewise, I should be able to fly my own flag if I feel the need to. Councils demanding that flags showing St George's cross are taken down on St George's day is not on.

In this country we have so much fear of insulting other cultures that we're completely forgetting our own. I'm all for stopping things that genuinely do insult other cultures but stopping nativity plays because they're a christian thing in case they upset people who follow different religions? Give me a ******* break.

Has anyone actually asked people from other religions if they find it offensive? I remember when Phoenix Nights started, Peter Kay got loads of abuse saying he was a disgrace for insulting people in wheelchairs with his Brian Potter character. Do you know who took offence? Able bodied people. People in wheelchairs thought he was great for doing it yet others assumed they'd be offended & so got offended on their behalf. I can't help but think that English people are doing the same with regards to other cultures.

I used to be fiercely patriotic & now I'm not at all because I've realised this country is run by absolute knobheads.

2. I wont be flying either the flag of St George or the Union Flag because they both contain red & I hate the colour & also due to my lack of patriotism.

3. Did you know that the Union Flag is only called a Union Jack when it's on board a ship?

I guess it goes back to the time of the boot boys and skin head mentality regarding me calling it neanderthal .
There is normally an underlying reason why someone insists on wanting to raise a flag pole and flying a flag . England have been notorious over the course of history for constantly invading countries and flying our flags on another mans land , and I can understand when some people think the Union flag is ' evil ' .
When it comes to flying flags , we really need to consider the feelings of our neighbours first as many find it offensive and slightly over powering . During the world cup , Queens jubilee / death , coronation etc , I have no problem with people temporarily paying their respects or support but to have one flying permanently is unnecessary .

I agree that if you go somewhere presumably you're going there because you enjoy that place. It would seem a bit odd to go there and then act in a different way to that which motivated you to go in the first place.

I just disagree with the whole premise of "I'm British, therefore I have xyz characteristics". That kind of generalisation is a dangerous form of nationalism that is little different to making assumptions based upon membership of any other group.

Supporting your national team is a relatively harmless form of this but the whole concept of war is founded on the nation state. It's sold as this country against another country when in fact it's one group of politicians against another group of politicians (who of course use a group of soldiers to do their dirty work).

How many people say they hate the British or Americans when in fact who they hate are people like Bush or Blair?

The ones they've tried to 'liberate' most likely. There was a report on the news today that the cost of funding a soldier for a week would change the lives of entire towns in Afghanistan. We are there too, so Im not blaming you guys.

Even reports like this

fuel anti nationalist sentiment. Its deciding that people like this would be better off under our watch adds to it. We shouldn't impose our ways on others unless they want to live in our place. Its sad your government wants to dismantle your image because of your foreign policies. We should be striving to build a better form of energy so we don't have to rely on oil.

So many points to make and so little time.

Just be proud to be English, we don't mind. We'll still flog you in the 5th test though!

Look at it, in all its greatness...

Before the war this flag in all its greatness used to be in every single british garden, afterward I struggle to see it.

Is it time for us to take back what is rightfully ours and not the National Guards?

So please, buy a flag and pole. Stick it in your garden.. Enjoy it.

Couldn't if I wanted to . Too many immigrants who may get upset . It's a fukn joke . Try and raise it in West Yorkshire and see how you get on . I'm not a little Englander , but I wanna be proud , once more , of my country .
Sorry to be controversial , an' all ,but it's a fact .
N.H.S. on it's arse coz we're trying to heal the world . Charity , as they say , begins at home .

There'll be murders over this thread .

That is , alas , fact . That's where we made our mistake . Try and burn a U.S. flag in America and see what happens .

Plenty of Aussie flags in our gardens. Neanderthal and intimidting? Buddy people want to come to your country and raise their own flags?? We are a massively multi cultural nation, and thats why people come here. To get away from their own strife and join in on the Australian way. They love it. We love it.

We take abit of pride in our Nation, looks like big brother has lost your its judging by the last poster.

Amen , my brother . My point in a nutshell .

It's normal here to fly the Danish flag. They're everywhere and the majority of houses have a flag pole. Even we have a flag pole, and when the flag isn't flying, it has a Danish windsock thingy on it. The Danish flag is on everything, and it is a celebratory symbol.

It is a bit annoying, though. You can't get away from the damned thing.
