What’s everyone’s thoughts on tipping?

I’m a generous tipper, I’ll usually tip around 20% of the bill when we go for food, especially if we get good service.

I also tip my barber, taxi drivers, delivery drivers and bar tenders, but I think that’s cos I’ve got family who work or worked in hospitality and was always taught to tip.

Some of my mates will either refuse to tip, or tip a small amount, as they think the person serving is already being paid so doesn’t need a tip.

Interested to know what other people’s thoughts are on this.

I generally tip most of the time.

Always tip the taxi driver and my barber. When I go for food, I make sure I have a few quid in my pocket to tip as I always pay everything by card.

When I go out, I tip the bar person after I've had a couple, not on the first drink though. Most bars now are ok to tip via card so they can get a drink or what not

But yeh, I don't mind tipping

What’s the reason for not tipping?

It just doesn't cross my mind tbh.

I tip in restaurants I guess to round it up to the nearest 10 or something (although a lot of places put on 10% or whatever anyway now, which I tend to pay)

But other than that, it's never crossed my mind to tip hairdresser, taxi, bar person

I tip quite a bit a local breweries that I frequent, probably amounts to like 40% or so, but it tends to get payed back in free pints/four packs. And most of the folks who work there are acquaintances anyways.

At restaurants I will tip at least 25%, but then again I waited tables for many years during school. My motto is that if you're too cheap to tip, then you probably shouldn't be eating/drinking out in the first place, as it's only a few extra $$. I hate it when people go out and spend like 50$ on a dining and then agonize over a few extra dollars for the tip. Just stay home.

I live in the USA, so most waitstaff at restaurants don't make a living hourly wage.

I tip waiting staff 10% as a rule, but I will leave more if they've been especially good, and won't tip them if they piss me off. Always cash, and I tell them to make sure it goes to them, not the establishment.

Usually tip taxi drivers, or let them keep change to nearest £5.

Haven't been in a barber shop for 20 odd years.

My brother In law worked in the hotel industry for 30 years from porter to concierge and was always going on about tips.
If you didn't give him a tip you were the biggest asshole ever.
Same fellah would not tip anyone, anytime any place anywhere.
He is known to everyone as the Hinge.

And why would they think that?

I always tip in a Restaurant if the Waitess presents the bill and collects the money. Nowadays though its usually order at bar and pay them. Always tip taxi bloke to, not been to Hairdresser for about 15 years so no need for that. My Mom is old school and tips everyone possible, when I go on holiday with her I have to save 20 quid of my spending money to match her for tips. It's always
Coach Driver there and back
Waitress end of week
Bar staff when ordering drink
Chambermaid when leaving end of holiday
