Tipping

It's a US habit that some in the uk have adopted because they see it on the tv/films. Not necessary here because people are paid by the establishment, whereas in the US they are paid a derisory amount- just because.
Not true. I do it because I did waiting and bar work in my youth, it's crappy pay and you have to deal with no end of arseholes.

I tip cabbies, too, because those guys work long, horrible hours and also have to deal with lots of c....

I quite like tipping for good service in a restaurant. It's a nice way to recognise that it has been a good meal. The staff there work hard for pretty naff money.

Don't tip anywhere else. Don't understand why anyone wouldn't just charge what it costs ...
What's charged and what it costs isn't always down to the person you may or may not tip.

With a minimum wage in place you can't claim it's crappy pay, you can only claim it's a crappy job.

There is a tipping culture in the US because there are people getting paid $2/hr by their employer so they can't survive without tips. But in the UK there are thousands of different jobs paying minimum wage. You'd never tip a helpful member of staff in a supermarket even though they earn the same as bar staff.

I refuse on principle to pay any tip that's been automatically added without my consent. Even if the service was great and I'd happily choose to pay a tip, if that choice is made for me, they're getting nothing. Luckily most restaurants don't do that so I'll tip good service if it deserves it. Usually servers don't go out of their way to earn a tip, they don't expect one like they would in America.

Minimum wage is crappy pay.

I give large tips at Christmas to people like my hairdresser and will chip in on tips when out for meals with mates but never really tip outside of that. I’m not even a tight arse it just doesn’t even enter my head to do it.

About 20% in restaurants if all is good - depends how it works out with the rounding up could be a little higher/lower

Round up to the nearest fiver when getting my hair cut or a taxi.
Takeaway delivery drivers get a couple of quid.

'Take one for yourself' if I'm getting a round in for a few people as I'm only going the bar every few drinks but I'd not be tipping constantly if I was out with Mrs CT and going the bar everytime - it'd be like taking two people out.

Always tip where appropriate. Barber, restaurant etc. I even keep a tin full of change near the door for the delivery driver. I had a panic attack once when she'd ordered a big scran on Just Eat and we didn't have change for the driver. I honestly contemplated giving him a couple of bottles of beer from the fridge.

I thought this was a fly tipping thread my bloods boiling

Lol , usually Torquay on one of those old folks holidays

Most of the Torquay residents are now zombies off their head on that spice stuff, wander up the top end of the town and you'll be able to help yourself to their cash as they have no idea what's going on.
