The tipping culture varies across the world. In the US on my travels i was horrified by the relentless tipping. When leaving a hotel you had a concierge, bellboy, car valet etc all fleecing you for every last dollar. I appreciate that they are underpaid but its non stop. A 10 or 15% tip was considered an insult!
That does not translate across the pond. I'm all for paying tips where the service has been excellent and is warranted. But the service industry in general in the UK and Ireland has tanked post Covid. I rarely encounter decent service from bar or restaurant staff...lucky to get a bloody smile these days. Again, I worked in retail so I know how customers can drive you nuts.
But I'm finding lately I'm more resentful to tip somebody just for the sake of it. Earn your tips. If you can't bother to smile, be polite or you know, do your job, then maybe you shouldn't work in hospitality.
For example at our work Xmas party, we had a tab at a bar after our meal. Had an area reserved and we're dropping a fair few quid in the place. I'm stood at the bar, waiting like 5 full minutes trying to catch anyones attention from behind the bar...young lads busying about with glasses (unable to serve perhaps), others just rushing about avoiding any eye contact with patrons...I eventually called to a woman pulling a pint: "sorry, any chance I could order something please?" Her response was gruff and immediate. "Can't you see we're very busy". I wouldn't normally get annoyed but I had to have a word with the manager and grass her up. Am I the baddie???
