Tipping

The tipping culture varies across the world. In the US on my travels i was horrified by the relentless tipping. When leaving a hotel you had a concierge, bellboy, car valet etc all fleecing you for every last dollar. I appreciate that they are underpaid but its non stop. A 10 or 15% tip was considered an insult!

That does not translate across the pond. I'm all for paying tips where the service has been excellent and is warranted. But the service industry in general in the UK and Ireland has tanked post Covid. I rarely encounter decent service from bar or restaurant staff...lucky to get a bloody smile these days. Again, I worked in retail so I know how customers can drive you nuts.

But I'm finding lately I'm more resentful to tip somebody just for the sake of it. Earn your tips. If you can't bother to smile, be polite or you know, do your job, then maybe you shouldn't work in hospitality.

For example at our work Xmas party, we had a tab at a bar after our meal. Had an area reserved and we're dropping a fair few quid in the place. I'm stood at the bar, waiting like 5 full minutes trying to catch anyones attention from behind the bar...young lads busying about with glasses (unable to serve perhaps), others just rushing about avoiding any eye contact with patrons...I eventually called to a woman pulling a pint: "sorry, any chance I could order something please?" Her response was gruff and immediate. "Can't you see we're very busy". I wouldn't normally get annoyed but I had to have a word with the manager and grass her up. Am I the baddie???

Most of the Torquay residents are now zombies off their head on that spice stuff, wander up the top end of the town and you'll be able to help yourself to their cash as they have no idea what's going on.
Yes sadly it's not what it was. We use it more as a base and usually bus it to Babbacome, Shaldon and Totnes.

Not true. I do it because I did waiting and bar work in my youth, it's crappy pay and you have to deal with no end of arseholes.

I tip cabbies, too, because those guys work long, horrible hours and also have to deal with lots of c....
It is true that the US paycthat kind of job very poorly expecting pay to be topped up by the customer. Consequently it can be cheaper to eat out.
In my eyes a business sets a fee and that's what you pay if you agree. No mysterious extras later.
My missus is a compulsive tipper - way too generous too, even if the service has been diabolical and we've been ilargely ignored. Even with good service, a tenner for about 5 minutes attention an hour is probably better pay than a brain surgeon with many hours of training and university debt. Mad.

In Czech there's no tipping culture, service is included by law in your bar or restaurant bill.

Prague establishments started adding "service not included" on bills, but this is just to fleece tourists.

In the countryside outside of Prague, Krumlov it's typical to round up, but not expected.

I only tip if the service is far beyond the standard.
I don't get tips in my work place for doing my job properly and don't really understand why people in other sectors should expect to?
If you get them then great but I don't think we it should be an expectation.

It's that cheap I always feel like I'm robbing them in places like that.

Rural Spain's weird for tipping, you give them a euro and they look at you like you've just bought them a car.

Last place I didn’t.

Part of good service is looking after your guests, and not letting everyone’s time be dominated by a feral child being a bell end.

It's borderline offensive in some places to tip, especially if you visit regularly - rounding up is fine.

My mates wife loses her mind if you ever tip in her presence. She's from near Cordoba and thinks we're absolutely insane for giving tips. To her it's like buying a packet of smokes in a supermarket and adding a quid on for the sake of it.

America baffles me though, I never know what to do. Do I tip here, there? Do I pay now? Do you want my bank card and PIN number? JUST BE NORMAL!

10% for good service. Nothing otherwise.
We don't eat out that often mind you because it's so absurdly expensive. Maybe once a month?
