Evening lads,

Just started at a huge UK brand (after years of working at smaller companies).

It's very different to what I'm used to, and I was interested to see if anyone's had any long term experience in places like these.

What's the best ways to progress in these kinds of environments?

I'm expecting some funny responses as well as serious ones lol

I have worked for two very large corporations here in the states. One of them was my college spending money job that turned into a career.

For me, in order to stand out and progress in a large corporate setting, working harder and being better at your job is the key. There is a ton of competition for places.

Aligning yourself with the right people is also very key. There are politics in the corporate world, but even more important, if someone is a standout at a large corporation, they are probably really good at what they do. Probably could learn a thing or two from them.

i retrained as a BT engineer in 2012, i lasted all of 8 months as i couldnt stand the way they operate. no one actually has a clue what your doing , but you have to answer to 4 or 5 bosses that are completly on top of you yet are totally incompetent at their own job. its all about risk assesments and ticking boxes, not actually doing any work.

My experiences at larger companies:

- The higher staff number meant there were a lot of lazy passengers making it pretty easy to stand out with a bit of talent and hard-work.

- Projects - there's always projects going on which (after you've proved yourself) you can ask your boss to get in on as an SME (subject matter expert) in your area, invariably there'll be a global team running projects too, get on these and get yourself some decent travel opportunities.

- Network, especially cross team/region, keep an eye out for other areas asking for help on internal communication systems and go out of your way to get these quick wins for reputation.

- Don't get drawn into gossip, avoid negative people, almost become robotic, there's less acceptance for these types in a formal corporate environment and managers know who's who.

Be aware the big companies tend to have re-orgs often, do all of the above to keep yourself away from these, often it's really a culling exercise.

I've worked for one for the last ten years roughly and it's alright really. The security is nice.

Tips. Don't change from who you are. That's what got you the job. I see so many corporate suck ups and they're all total bellends.

Also, sign up for the pension scheme. I mean I despise seeing it taken from my wage every month but I guess it's a good thing really. I think.
