Titanic Tourist Submarine Goes Missing

Forgive my ignorance, but what problem was this new design meant to solve?

There’s obviously been existing vessels which have visited deep sea locations for decades, what was the drive behind the guy / company coming up with new engineering etc (aside from money).

I'd imagine it was purely money mate.

We can only hope that they didn't have time to realise. I saw an interview with Bob Ballard where he said they were on their way up at the time (so they knew something was wrong - not sure how he knows that though) but the pilot wouldn't have panicked in that situation so I doubt the passengers would either. He would have just taken it up and with every 100 meters or so it's that much less pressure on the hull but obviously never got that far and it would have been over in an instant.

More than sad he made his son go on a trip he didn't want to though. I remember going on a tourist type sub in Gran Canaria and even though it doesn't dive very deep and you can clearly see the light in the water you still feel the trepidation of what could happen if something goes wrong. I wouldn't have begged, coerced or demanded anyone to go with me that didn't want to do it themselves, nevermind spending hours in one in total darkness going to depths that can crush anything that has the slightest bit of air in it.
Hopefully it was an instant collapse and they didn't all drown over a couple of minutes..

Would you rather: a sudden and instant death or falling asleep and never waking up?

The sheer idea of needing to decide gives me anxiety. Hopefully they didn't feel a thing.

What's the difference? In both instances you're conscious then you're not.

I mean, if you're consciously aware of death and that it's going to come, would you not be fearful? For example, consider the notion of a solar flare destroying mankind and how helpless you are about preventing it. Think about that and tell me it doesn't make you anxious. At least if you go into a deep sleep and never wake up you can rest assured. There is a difference, I think.

That's a different question to what you asked though.

What you should be asking is would you rather:

Instantly die with no prior warning vs knowing you're going to die very soon and that you'll first drift off.

Can't imagine anyone not picking the first thing in that scenario.

I also don't get anxious about things I have zero control over like said solar flares.

Knowing you're going to die gives you a chance to sort a few things out though. Like cancel the milk, shoot Boris etc.

Not from 3000m under the sea though, admittedly. I'd prefer that to be without warning.
