I wouldn't necessarily say he plays left wing, but he does play on the left side of midfield. Also rotates through the middle as well, which is I think why we(villa fans) are disappointed. We are comparing him to other midfielders because thats where we compare him

I read somewhere that he ran/carried the ball the furthest out of any player in the PL. Not 100% sure if its completely accurate but I wouldn't be surprised.

Phillips is a defensive midfielder, an area where we're particularly weak. I would've liked to see Grealish too though. But as LW his competitors are the likes of Sterling, Sancho, Rashford. And at CAM he's competng with the likes of Foden and Mount. So it looks like Southgate prefers them. Maybe Grealish's off field behaviour is also a factor for Southgate.

I'd have him instead of Mount to be honest I think he's a better more productive player. I think you could be right about off field antics, he's a bit of a bell isn't he, good player though.

I actually think he comes across as a decent fella generally just got a bit of a stupid streak in him IMO. I like him as a player too and would probably have him in if I was manager. But good that Southgate has some principles that he's sticking too even if we might not always agree with them
 

Probably kept Merson just for the reason that everyone has a laugh at him for pretty much everything he says and plus not been able to say peoples names, use to be good when they had a mix every single week before they stuck to the 4 they had,
