Phillips is a defensive midfielder, an area where we're particularly weak. I would've liked to see Grealish too though. But as LW his competitors are the likes of Sterling, Sancho, Rashford. And at CAM he's competng with the likes of Foden and Mount. So it looks like Southgate prefers them. Maybe Grealish's off field behaviour is also a factor for Southgate.

He's better than Mount and he's had a lot more time on the pitch than Foden. Not really justifiable on that front imo.

Yeah I think Southgate puts a lot of value on off field behaviour and not just on pitch performance. Maddison has had some issues there too. But then Walker has been recalled so I might just be chatting bubbles.
