What am I missing here?

In his defence he is one of the most successful midfielders in the game, but he looks overmatched in their system because he can't find the same range of vertical passes he was using for Bayern which is the main reason you'd play him. His calling card in Germany was taking the opposition midfield out of the game with a quality direct through ball. I've hardly seen him play in England, but the couple of games I've seen he doesn't get anything like the time he was used to and can't use the feints or dummies to make space. Commentators come with a pre-arranged narrative of what they want to see, rather than what's happening. The same happens with Pogba and a whole bunch of midfielders who try to play the same role.
