He’s still employed by Spurs until he signs for someone else.

It’s like not bothering to turn up for work because you might be getting another job offer.
It's different though because millions of people can mow lawn or punch numbers into Excel but there are about 8 people who can do what Harry Kane does.

He's not really losing anything by putting the pressure on Spurs. He's decided he wants to win things and he's appraised the situation at Tottenham and (rightly) decided it won't be happening there. If he plays for them and they run him into the ground (again) that only hurts his chances of making a move later. So why not wait out the window and then show up when you're ready if they decide not to sell?

He's got a lot of leverage and he's using it.

Is he? I'm not sure I see what's so terrible about it at least from his perspective. I get Spurs supporters aren't thrilled.

You have to make assumptions, because no one actually knows the full story, other than a few folk.

He is half (?) way through a 6 year mega contract, which apparently has no buy out clause. Apparently, he had an agreement with Spurs that he could leave this summer, dependent on the offer. If an offer has been made, it wasnt enough to meet Spurs valuation, again, apparently.

Now he has decided/advised to hunker down in Florida, and wont be available to train until he returns, gets a covid test, and isolates. No way will he be available for selection for his clubs first game.

Its an absolute mess mate.

Doesn't matter how specialised your job is you still turn up for work.

Irrelevant how many people can do your job or if you are the best in your field. If you don't turn up to work without permission you are unprofessional. Harry Kane's behaviour is unprofessional.

I think that's the whole point?

You asked what his leverage is and that's it right there. Spurs need him to play to hit their aims this year or they need to be able to use money from his sale to buy replacements. Otherwise they're just worse off and everyone knows. And he's got concrete interest from another club.

Neither of these are wrong, but it doesn't mean he's being terribly advised.

If he was in a final year, I would agree with you. But he isnt.

If City value him as much as Spurs do, then fair enough; but they obviously dont.

He needs to look after himself though. Spurs won't do it for him. He played 4000 minutes last season and then went off to the Euros and played every minute of every game there pretty much. Even if Spurs don't sell him he needs to stay fit for next summer or the next summer or whenever. So take some time off to start the year.

It's funny because I hate this premise where City are going to buy up all the talent but at the same time for the individual players they should have some ability to control their own careers.

They have, to a degree. No one forced Kane to sign a 6 year contract with no escape clause, hence, badly advised.
Well yes that's dumb but I didn't think you were talking about that part of it.

Players should never extend their deals in football. It's too binding. Clubs feel like they can jack up fees after that and you never have the ability to move.

I don't know the terms of Kane's contract but am fairly certain that he will have breached them. This 'gentleman's agreement' he claims to have sounds a bit odd. With Agents and business men involved I can't see 'shaking hands' on something as important as this would be acceptable to either party.

Thats what I meant mate. Whoever advised him then is advising him now.
