You can only do it if you start with your arms behind your back.

Realistically, you aren't going to lean to a side with a knee up and put your hands behind your back when your aim is to control a ball and move off with it or towards it. There's no pre-requisite to have your hands behind your back when facing up to defend; the only pre-requisite is that you don't make your body unnaturally bigger, as per Law 12.

Everything James did was a natural motion and justifiable. By the rulebook, it's not a penalty.
