Today’s Football - 2024/25 Season

Selling Alvarez and replacing him with Gundogan sums that up.
Alvarez left because he is a striker and wanted to be played as one, rather than a quasi inside-forward, winger, midfielder, number 10 or whatever Pep tried.

I still think Gundogan was a prudent acquisition based on his influence before he left for Barcelona, but some of the other purchases are pretty mad.

Savinho, Doku and Nunes are nowhere near what Palmer or Mahrez would have offered; they've also let other players go who've gone on to prosper.

De Bruyne is passed his best in terms of availability to play and consistency, and once Rodri was out they look a different side.

Mad how one player can have such a significant impact on a side.
I can't say I watch City as much as others, but from speaking to a few people involved at City, they laud his tactical discipline and how he underpins their system.

We all know Pep plays some absolutely baffling systems where defenders and midfielders have about three different positions within a game.

They say Rodri is the player who it pivots around, and it's him who often reads the game in a way that danger is recognised and dealt with early on.

Without him, they're all over the place.
