Even crap like utd- fernandes....

And then there's teams like us who can lose our two best players in ndiaye and mcneil, as well as our main striker yet still get results....

Academies/football schools are producing athletes not specialist players. It's easier to flog a strong and quick jack of all trades than focus on producing a full back or an attacking mid for instance. Get 'em on the books and let the clubs pour the resources in to make them fit a system.

I'd hazard a guess and say it's similar to the sporting college system in the u.s. (*acknowledge the tennis system is very different) where promising teenagers are prompted to try out for NFL or NBA as that is where the majority of the biggest money resides, can't cut it there? then athletics or certain other team sports are the draw. There is a reason why the ladies football team is so strong, because they've had a reserve of athletes and suddenly a path for them to succeed upon.

Rugby Union is the same.

The likes of Sale ask the schools to send them they`re best athletes to look at, as rugby can be " coached into them".

Didn't Wimbledon do the same? Recruit based off a physical model and then try to coach some football in to them.

Vague recollection of a lad playing for them against us who could run 100 km/h but would fall over the ball.
