Germany 0 Brazil 1

Brazil are really up for this. It looks like they are on a mission to avenge the WC semi final catastrophe.
Keep everyone fit they look red hot favourites. They have kinda gone back to the 2002 style (albeit that team played 3-4-3), very solid defensively through the middle, great attacking full backs, and a quality front three.

In 2002 Silva and Kleberson sat in midfield as the two defensive players, this team Casemiro, Fernandinho and Paulinho are the midfield three (all three are essentially defensive midfielders, Paulinho only marginallly more attacking). Central defenders in both sides are a similar level. Both teams difficult to break down through the middle.

The attacking threat out wide in both teams comes from the full backs (wing backs in the case of 2002), 2002 team had Cafu and Roberto Carlos bombing down the wings, this team has Alves and Marcelo. Both front threes can win a match on their own. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo to Neymar, Coutinho, Willian (or Jesus etc.).

Brazil tend to change their style when bad results happen (happened after the 1980s when their flamboyant football of Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Careca etc went unrewarded), they tightened up with a more pragmatic approach led by Dunga in central midfield (despite winning that team is not appreciated at all in Brazil due to the style). They tightened up again in 2002 as a consequence of being cut open and have done so again for this tournament after the hiding from Germany.

I think they should tweak this side though as that current midfield three is too defensive. Take out Paulinho, shift Coutinho back and put him just behind the front three, they have more creativity in midfield and with Casemiro and Fernandinho more than enough defensive cover in behind.

Defence non existent.

This performance is a good illustration as to why it’s nonsense to base the ability of a player based on international success. Messi has zero chance with this team (but for him they wouldn’t be at the World Cup). 2010 was arguably the worst dereliction of duty by a governing body in football history when the Argentine FA appointed a clown (Maradona) to manage them in a World Cup. They essentially forfeited any chance. The next World Cup, 2014, Higuain decided he was going to miss everything.

Maradona played in a team that had world class defenders (Passarella couldn’t get in the team). He had two forwards in Valdano and Burrachaga converting the chances. Maradona was awesome in that World Cup, but he could never have lifted the trophy without his teammates. He plas ilan any of Messi’s teams he has no chance.

I don't think its much to ask for to expect one of the best players of all time to have to carry a club in which he isn't surrounded by all-world players. He's never really done that as an international. He's never really been as good as say Gareth Bale was in the Euros in an international tourney. He doesn't have to win it, but I think he needs to take over an international event before his career is over.

Mental that Aspas manages to come on for them.

I actually saw Aspas play in a Celta Vigo match against Barcelona about 2 years ago. Himself and Nolito utterly tore them apart and they ended up winning 4-1 or something. I had assumed it was a different Aspas to the one who played for Liverpool, but no it was the same lad. He looked great that day

Wolves down to nine men against Besic's Boro.

Always liked the look of Adama Traore.... Lightening quick, strong, always looks a threat on the ball, can pick a pass as well
