Amazing to think Everton were in this competition earlier in the season. What an arduous slog the Europa League is.

But honestly, why can’t Everton ever put a team together that can play football like this? I’d love it if commentators said the type of stuff they say about Atletico about Everton, like “they just don’t concede goals”.

It shouldn’t be difficult for one of the biggest names and successful clubs in English football, one of only a handful of teams that has competed every Premier League season to put a quality side together every now and then.

Aside from a purple patch around 2004/05 under Moyes where we overachieved, the last quality team we had was 2013/14, and that was because we had a fresh new manager who loves to attack at the expense of defence, but had a well-drilled defence already in place courtesy of the ex-manager.

Atletico is too good to be in the Europa League... really a fluke they dropped into it from the CL group stage. Surely would have won a round or two in the CL knockout stages.

And of course next year the EL is going to be chock full of trash and easier to win, so naturally Everton have failed to qualify.

One thing’s for sure, Simeone would have never used such suicidal tactics against the RS as City or Roma did. They’ve made it that far on their own quality but also on the naivete/arrogance of their opponents.
