Broadly a Venables and Mullery thing. Hated each other at Spuz, became rival managers of two decent Div 3 ( League 1) sides in the mid 70's. Came to a head in Dec 76, FA Cup 1st Round 2nd Replay ( remember those?) Stamford Bridge, Palace won 1-0 aet after a retaken Brighton pen (scored) was made to be retaken (missed) due to Brighton encroachment.Mullery a bit miffed and was disappointed to receive some (ahem) good natured ribbing at the end so he threw all his coins at the Palace fans. Rivalry sealed.

Brighton became the Seagulls after they started chanting to mock the CP Eagles

Why are Crystal Palace and Brighton rivals? It's more history than geography
