It replaces most friendly matches. But not them all like they've claimed.

It's a back door into the euro 2020 play offs.

The euro qualification proper starts in March. 10 groups. Top 2 in each are through. Simple.

The remaining 4 spaces are through the play offs. You qualify for the playoffs by being in the best 16 teams in the nations league, who haven't already qualified. These 16 teams will then be drawn into 4s. There will be a semi final draw for each section of 4. The two winners will play in the final to qualify. The semis and final are both one legged. Home advantage goes to teams with best record in the qualification process. So the nations league can be a decent safety net for the middle of the road sides.
