Trent Alexander-Arnold revealed as chess enthusiast in five-minute defeat against world champion Magnus Carlsen

Trent Alexander-Arnold swapped a soccer field for a chess board when he took on the world champion.

It all ended pretty quickly.

The 20-year-old Liverpool defender lost to Carlsen in only 17 moves in a game that lasted five minutes on Monday.

"Although it may go down as a 1-0 loss, I will be practicing more and maybe there will be a rematch," Alexander-Arnold said.

The Liverpool player has played chess since he was a kid. "This whole experience has been an eye-opener, not only into just how much goes into becoming great at the game but also seeing the similarities between it and the sport I love, football," Alexander-Arnold said. "Football and chess can seem like polar sporting opposites, but there are so many similarities with the modern game."

17 moves and five minutes, Carlsen possibly the best player ever, but that's not particularly impressive.

Stick to football son.

Just read wes Morgan asking for a review because of how bad they are. He is so right though. I thought he could have done with one more warning, but he'd have got sent off sooner or later anyway. Why can't the PL grow some balls and bring it in now. I know it's partly unfair based on the games that have been, but it's mucker better to accept 8 games have been wrong and get 30 right than have all 38 being wrong.

Wes Morgan stepped on Richarlison’s foot when he was already on a yellow. The referee was right there. He got what he deserved.

Must've lost due to concussion, poor lad.

Stoppage time winner for the RS. Nailed on.

Surprised the media didn't bill this as 'Champion vs Challenger.'

I guess he counts although apparently when he left Hamburg for City he was fighting with the club over whether he was allowed to play in the Olympics. I don't think there is a single Belgian National Team player who doesn't have something dodgy about them.

They're all a bunch of waffles.

Cue loan movements.

Wigan takeover, he'll have a big input it seems.

The Whelan family have owned the majority shareholding in Wigan Athletic since 1995
A Wigan statement read: "The consent from the EFL was received in summer 2018 and IEC is now proceeding into the final phase of obtaining its shareholders' approval in Hong Kong.
"The change of ownership is expected to [be] complete within the next six weeks subject to, and upon the fulfilment of, certain conditions including the approval by the shareholders of IEC of the relevant transactions for the change of ownership."

Meanwhile, the IEC's announcement also confirmed former Everton and Manchester City manager Joe Royle, along with his son Darren Royle, will be the company's UK representatives on a new board of directors at Wigan.

Former Everton manager Joe Royle is being lined up to join the board of directors at Wigan
The letter from the IEC board stated Joe Royle's appointment would "mitigate the relegation risk" and "enhance its chances to be promoted".
Wigan were Sky Bet League One champions last season, and are currently 12th in the Championship table.
