Biggest problem with our defence this season is the same problem we had in Pep's first year, the full backs. Walker is completely burned out. He came back early after the world cup full of p*ss and vinegar. He needed the rest but chose not to take it, and halfway through the season he is making game changing mistakes purely down to his concentration. That has to be tiredness. He needed a rest and didn't get it.
Mendy got injured again, and yet again we have to rely on Delph. We got away with it last season and despite not being a left back he played out of his skin. He's been caught out this season. Teams have worked out he is the weak point and have targeted him. He's also been unable to raise his game to the same levels of last season. Stones and Laporte are both excellent, but they're having to cover the mistakes of the full backs and that is what has made us vulnerable this season.
Losing KDB hasn't helped, and losing Dinho for the run of losses was the real killer. Our cover for Walker is pretty decent, but until the last couple of games Danilo has been injured too, so Walker didn't get a rest. The other cover we have for when Delph and Mendy are out is Zinchenko. He is a midfielder and still a kid.
Despite what the papers say, we are very light in certain areas of the pitch. We have no real cover for left back, but the big problem is who will replace Dinho. He was MOTM tonight and is the heartbeat of the team. I think back to when we signed him and the media mocked us for paying £30M for an old Brazilian who no one had heard of. They all said Paulinho who signed for Spurs was the far better player. Dinho will be 34 before the end of the season, there's no way he can continue to perform at these levels in his position for much longer.
I fully expect us to sign a replacement in the summer, along with a new left back.
