It's a fact, they get told stuff from someone watching a monitor, has been going on for years, even before VAR.
I got told this from a high level referee once. His example was that he had allowed a goal and as the other side was appealing as they were about to kick off again, he was told he had made a mistake in his ear. He said that put huge pressure on him for the rest of the game.
