If he'd had slotted, VAR would likely have overruled the referee to award the goal I think. Mad that he didn't just put it in!

I think once the whistle goes the game is dead and nothing can be done to overrule it, that's why refs let things go to let VAR decide. But I'd be sticking it in then asking the ref for an explanation at least, looked like it would've been a perfectly good goal.

Not that I give a toss, and not that they don’t deserve it 100x over, but the ref honestly needs a sacking for the stuff he pulled with Gakpo & Areola. He clearly makes the wrong decision to tell Gakpo to stop, then he doubles down on it by basically telling the keeper to go down and calling on the medical team, to try to get away with it? WTF hahahaha… thank god Gakpo didn’t just slot otherwise it would stand
